MAI-Image-2.7: new light for a finished image
Microsoft just dropped an image model that only edits, for now: light, style, lettering, restoration. What that could bring between sheet and shot, and where a brand should look closely.

On 27 October 2026, Microsoft AI showed MAI-Image-2.7 as a preview, an image model that only edits for now. Relight an entire scene or change its style, swap text and symbols inside the image, restore existing images. Text-to-image is supposed to follow later. You can try it on Arena, at Artificial Analysis and in the MAI Playground.
We build characters, places and light as sheets first and approve them before a shot is made. And light is exactly where it often gets sticky. For Rapido, our spec ad for Electrolux, we generated the living room twice from the same brief. Small differences in the light decided it: cool daylight in the first version, warm afternoon light in the second.
Look closely and you'll see more than new light: the sofa, the window and the framing aren't the same. A model that takes an approved image and only turns the light is aimed at exactly this step. This is one of those cases where a pure editing model brings more than yet another text-to-image model.
What is actually new
Editing images with a prompt isn't new. We do it ourselves: on 21 ZUAN, our spec ad for Seagull 1963, one sheet prompt starts with "Edit the attached photo", made with Nano Banana 2. What's new is that Microsoft launches with a model that only edits, and splits editing into clear disciplines:
- Relight and restyle: relight an entire scene or move it into another style. According to Microsoft, this is the model's strongest discipline, with a 24 Elo lead over the next-best model.
- Text and symbols: change them so they stay integrated into the image.
- Restore and enhance: improve existing material.
- Edits that need thinking: Microsoft calls them "reasoning-based edits", changes where the model has to understand how objects, light and environment work together. Microsoft's example is moving a product into a new setting.
With the leaderboards, a cool head helps. Microsoft writes that MAI-Image-2.7 debuts at No. 3 on Arena Edit and No. 2 on Artificial Analysis's image editing leaderboard. Across all ten use cases and all seven editing actions that Artificial Analysis evaluates, it is said to beat its predecessor MAI-Image-2.6. Those are Microsoft's own figures at launch, and a leaderboard is a snapshot.
What it means for a production
Relight could become a step of its own between sheet and shot. A location sheet is approved once, and the night or evening version comes from it instead of from a new prompt. In the best case, the geometry stays put, which it didn't do with the living room in Rapido. Whether that holds only a test with real sheets will show.
Restyle is aimed at look consistency. When all the sheets of a film should share one visual language, a tool that matches the style of one image to the others is a serious candidate.
Then there's material from the client. On Frontier Engine for Epic Fusion, the interviews were filmed with a camera in the client's office, and we set the five agents into that same office with GPT Image 2: the same chair, the same light. Photos and plates a client brings rarely match the look of a film straight away. Relight and restyle go right at that gap. The fine work stays in compositing, for us in Fusion and DaVinci Resolve.
A preview with no price and no API isn't a production tool yet. More on that below.
What it means for a brand
Rights to the source image. Relight and restyle change the light, not who owns the image. If you edit photos from a brand, an agency or a stock library, check first whether that's allowed.
Product fidelity. A model that's good at changing text and symbols in an image is exactly what you need to watch with a product. On 21 ZUAN (spec ad for Seagull 1963), eight photos of the real watch became sheets so that the same watch arrives in every shot, down to the red star. On the dial, every printed character had to survive. With a product like that, lettering, label and shape belong next to the original after every edit.
Labelling and data. Microsoft's announcement says nothing about watermarks or content credentials, and nothing about price, API or terms of use. An AI-edited image is still an AI-edited image, even if only the light is new. And a public test platform is no place for campaign material before launch.
We're starting with editing, with text-to-image generation coming soon.

Our take and the limits
MAI-Image-2.7 is interesting because it treats editing as a discipline of its own. Relight and restyle fit right into the spot between an approved sheet and the shot, where today there's often a new prompt. What it's worth in practice only a test with our own sheets and our own material will show. The rankings are Microsoft's figures at launch.
Plenty is still open. Does the geometry hold when day turns into night? Do product details stay exact when everything around them is relit? What does it cost, will there be an API, and under which terms can the result go into client work? And when does text-to-image arrive? Microsoft only says "coming soon".
