Miao Xiaohong
A pilot in her mid-twenties. Calm, proud, quietly fearless. She takes off when the others stay on the ground.
An old woman opens a small wooden box. Inside is the watch she wore in the cockpit in 1963.
Miao Xiaohong sits by the window and looks at the sky. On her lap lies a wooden box, and in it the chronograph she wore sixty years ago, when she flew rescue missions through storms and zero visibility while others stayed on the ground.
The film moves between the two: old hands and a young pilot, a window and the sea of clouds above it. The watch is the only thing that is in both.
One watch, one woman sixty years apart, and a jet that no longer flies.
The watch came first. Eight photos of the real watch became a product sheet, a dial macro, the caseback and the movement, so the same watch arrives in every shot, down to the red star and the 21 jewels.
The pilot was built once as a young woman in 1963 and then aged by sixty years from the same face, so the grandmother is recognisably her. The Shenyang J-5 was rebuilt from archive photos as three-view sheets, in the studio and on the apron.
A pilot in her mid-twenties. Calm, proud, quietly fearless. She takes off when the others stay on the ground.
Sixty years later, by the window. Built from the face of the young pilot, so she is still the same woman.
Eight men on the apron, out of focus, who watch her climb into the cockpit.
Every shot started as a sheet.
The watch, the two women, the jet and the airfield, each built once so it looks the same in every shot. Turn the sphere, open one, read the start of the prompt behind it.
